Components of Coaching

  • What: Change typically occurs for the individual from the first interview as we are getting to know one another and beginning to define what the outcomes for our relationship are. Change becomes transformation when the person moves to the identity level.

  • When: As needed. Most often clients are referred by word of mouth. Once the introductions have occurred, we identify a time and place and go from there. Typically, I have not set a given day and time because of the flexibility required by my clients.

  • Where: Initial interviews are often but not always face to face, usually in the organizational setting. Subsequent work is done on the phone, at offsites, and when possible, in preferred settings where the person is relaxed (e.g. driving for race car enthusiast, sailing for sailors, eating for gourmands).

  • How: We begin with whatever the person describes as their present state, including their concerns and their outcomes. We proceed to identify change strategies and resources that will enable them to make the changes they desire.

  • How often and how long: Individually defined, and usually influenced by the outcomes that are desired. A minimum of 3-5 sessions are recommended. Ongoing relationships are common, with formal sessions continuing on an as-needed basis. Typically, they last an hour and a half, however I also do half day and full day sessions for more extensive work. Many of my relationships like this have continued on in some measure, even when I am no longer formally coaching the person. When a person demonstrates the orientation to coaching that I expect, I consider it a privilege to be in their life and want to continue the relationship if at all possible.
